Hello my name is __________ and I live in your riding of _____.
I’m calling to express my solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en Peoples, and my deep and profound hope that you will do everything in your power to have the RCMP stand down and withdraw from Wet’suwet’en territory.
The Wet’suwet’en have the legal title and rights to their own land. The Supreme Court’s Delgamuukw (pronounced DEL-ga-mook) decision establishes this in law.
Despite this clear title to the land and the acknowledged right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent to activities taking place on this land, the government and courts of BC are prioritizing Coastal Gas Link’s proposed pipeline over the rights of the Wet’suwet’en peoples.
Early on February 6, 2020, the RCMP started arresting people and raided monitoring posts, the supporter camp, Gidimt’en Checkpoint, and finally the Unist’ot’en Camp and healing lodge on Monday, February 10.
Reports have come out that in the January 2019 raid on these same land defenders, the RCMP were permitted to use “lethal overwatch.” I was horrified to learn that the RCMP, under the direction and oversight of the federal government, was authorized to kill people who are defending their legally ascribed rights to their territories for the sake of corporate profit.
As my federal representative I am calling on you to intervene. It is the responsibility of the federal government to ensure that the rights of Indigenous nations are upheld, and that nation-to-nation relationships are respectful.
In solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en, I implore you to listen to the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs, and heed their demands. I am calling on you to:
- Respect the Wet’suwet’en laws and governance system. Stop the forceful removal and arrests of Wet’suwet’en people from their own territories and the destruction of their camps.
- Ensure that the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Wet’suwet’en Nation’s right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent are respected by the state and the RCMP.
- Withdraw the RCMP and associated security and policing services from Wet’suwet’en lands, in agreement with the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimiation’s (CERD) request.
- Require the province to cease construction of the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline project and suspend permits.
When can I expect an update on what actions you’ve taken to ensure Wet’suwet’en rights are respected?
