PETITION: Prime Minister Trudeau, stop defending voter suppression and the "Fair Elections Act"

Stop the Unfair Elections Act

Dear Prime Minister,

During the last election campaign, you promised to stand up for the right of every Canadian to vote and take measures to maintain the openness, transparency and accountability of our democracy.

To that end, I am calling on you to stop opposing the Charter challenge by the Council of Canadians and the Canadian Federation of Students that is seeking to repeal the anti-democratic and U.S.-style voter suppression measures in the Harper Conservatives’ so-called Fair Elections Act.

Elections Canada estimates 172,000 eligible voters were denied their constitutional right to vote in 2015 as a direct result of the Act. So it is unconscionable that you are now defending it.

With the 2019 federal election rapidly approaching this Charter challenge may be the last chance of preventing a potential repeat of such egregious voter suppression under your watch.

The time for you to act is now.

Sincerely,

The Council of Canadians is Canada’s leading grassroots social action group. For 33 years our work has remained 100 per cent independent and funded by generous donations from people like you. We do not accept corporate or government funding, and never have.
