Back off Trudeau respect Indigenous rights and B.C.’s no to Kinder Morgan

Kinder Morgan just blinked. After years of sustained pressure led by Indigenous peoples, Kinder Morgan has said it will suspend all “non-essential activities” on its Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. The Texas-based corporation has given a deadline of May 31 to find agreement, after which point it would be “...difficult to conceive of any scenario in which we would proceed with the Project.”

This is big news, but our efforts to stop this massive tar sands export pipeline must not stop. In fact, we need to ramp up our response!

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Natural Resources Minister James Carr are both pressuring the B.C. government, asking Premier John Horgan to stop all “threats to delay” the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Recently, Kinder Morgan representatives told investors that they want the federal government to take “pre-emptive action” to stop B.C. from wielding its jurisdictional authority.

Prime Minister Trudeau hit back on Twitter stating: “Canada is a country of the rule of law, and the federal government will act in the national interest. Access to world markets for Canadian resources is a core national interest. The Trans Mountain expansion will be built.”

Natural Resource Minister Carr said: “We will act in Canada’s national interest to see that this project is built.”

The federal government must stop citing “national interest” in its effort to exclude the voices of people who oppose this pipeline expansion, which are now overwhelming them. This is an effort to mislead the public into believing that everyone benefits from this pipeline when in reality, the primary beneficiaries are multinational oil corporations and their executives.
