Dear Premier Ford, I am deeply concerned that Ontario changed the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act in a way that would allow fracking in Ontario. Fracking uses large amounts of water and toxic chemicals to get at trapped shale gas. Fracking contributes to climate change and has been linked to earthquakes. There is nothing more important than clean water. Fracking can lead to groundwater contamination with heavy metals and even radioactive materials that are drawn from the rock. Fracking would pose serious risks to local watersheds in the Great Lakes Basin. Ontario has never shut the door on fracking. In 2015, Natural Resources Minister Bill Mauro said Ontario would not implement a moratorium on fracking. The previous Liberal government has gone so far as to assist oil and gas companies by releasing an aerial survey of southern Ontario that maps out shale gas reserves. Premier Ford, I am calling on you and your government to show the leadership needed to transition Ontario away from outdated fossil fuel projects. Ontario must transition to sustainable renewable energies. I call on you to protect our land, water and air by banning fracking.
